Having worked in Supply Chain for more than 25 years and in particular with Production planners, I have always seen this group of specialist as one of the busiest groups and always under a lot of stress.
That is what has prompted me to write this article. These are 8 characteristics which I feel they should develop and be within their core competencies. It will greatly help them to be better in their profession.
Attention to Detail. To be especially thorough in completing their tasks.
Diplomacy. A pleasant disposition goes a long way as often the job requires dealing with peers having different objectives.
Ability to Tolerate. The ability to deal calmly in accepting criticism while at the same time negotiating effectively in high stress situations. It requires, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior. Always maintain composure.
Initiative. Job requires a willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges. It requires the planner to be independent and generate his own methods with minimal guidance or supervision. He needs to have sharp analytical skills for this.
Foresight. The ability to see potential hiccups in the horizon and taking early steps to avoid potential delays. This can only be achieved by having a very good understanding of the process flows and being proficient in backward scheduling tasks and MRP methodologies.
Being Innovative. This is one of biggest characteristics required especially in the face adversity when there this a dire need to generate ideas and work with peers or management to overcome delays. It requires planner to be independent and generate his own ideas with minimal guidance or supervision.
Leadership - Job requires the ability to lead, give inputs and direction. The planner needs to have good presentation skills, the ability to manage meetings, manage teams, peers and even management staff.
Goal and Achievement Oriented. Job requires establishing and maintaining personally challenging achievement goals and exerting effort toward mastering tasks.
